CSELT AND LUCENT TECHNOLOGIES ARE WORKING TOGETHER FOR NEXT GENERATION NETWORK INTELLIGENCE SOLUTIONS

Torino, 3 febbraio 2000 - Italy. Cselt, the Corporate Research Center of Telecom Italia Group, and Lucent Technologies (Nyse: Lu) today announced that they have entered in a strategic research cooperation on next generation network intelligence services and solutions. Cselt and Lucent Technologies have established to collaborate in the research area of "Network Intelligence Solutions for Convergence Scenarios". The cooperation signed today is designed to benefit both Cselt and Lucent Technologies by the joint exploration of Network Intelligence solutions supporting new classes of integrated services based around the convergence of Pstn/in and Internet. Thus, partners will anticipate service requirements from the market, the key output of the cooperation being a reduction in the time to market and costs for the deployment of new services. The Network Intelligence solutions will be built by incremental evolution of Lucent In and Data platforms, integrating these platforms with new products and services to form advanced platform solutions. The objectives of the co-operation will include the following: Creation of a portfolio of converged services readily deployable in the market; Allowing the best possible Return on Investment on already existing systems and solutions by ensuring the continuing viability of Lucent´s In and Data products through evolution studies and architectures which fit with commercial requirements; Evaluations in an Integration Lab based on evolution of the existing Lucent In and Data products with the new capabilities from Lucent and 3rd Parties which are coming into existence as a result of the availability of new technologies; Migration and deployment plans will be created for the most promising services, exploring the issues involved in turning demonstrations into services in the real network environment. Silvano Giorcelli, Head of the Services and Applications Division of Cselt, pointed out that: "Advanced services devised by Cselt for promoting and leveraging the telecomm business will benefit from the realization capabilities of Lucent Technologies. The merits and values of solutions will be evaluated by means of actual realization on network systems. Advanced solutions devised within the co-operation could be a useful means to steer the evolution of Lucent systems already deployed. This will lead to a shortened time from concept to deployment of service solutions". Christian Van Ghelder, Lucent Technologies Vice President of Emea Communications Software Group, said: "A close working relationship with Cselt will allow a greater alignment of product plans with customer needs from an early stage. In addition, it will bring us a greater understanding of the impacts of the requirements placed on Telecommunications Operators and how this translates into the technical impacts on the Lucent product line". The cooperation could also be a push towards the integration of Internet and Telecom Voice worlds, added Mr. Daniele Roffinella, Head of Network Intelligence Competence Area within Cselt: "It will result in a service solutions portfolio tailored on the evolving market demand for convergence. In addition, working in strong cooperation with Lucent can guarantee the backward compatibility and a smooth evolution path from current solutions to newer and advanced ones". Claudio Di Lorenzo, Lucent Technologies Italia Executive Director commented the event: "The cooperation with Cselt, one of the most advanced Telecom research lab, shows our commitment to continue playing a leading role in the challenging and fast changing Telecom market in Italy. The great expertise of Lucent Bell Labs and Cselt will ensure new services and solutions that encompass and integrate the ubiquitous Pots service with the user friendliness and the richness of Internet services". The research cooperation will focus its effort on: The definition of viable Service Platforms for Converged Services; The construction of Service Platform Components enabling the Control of Heterogeneous Network Resources; The definition of Apis for Service and Network Programming; The reuse of the Legacy of In systems. .
