IBM READIES 100 SOFTWARE VENDORS FOR NEXT GENERATION EMPLOYEE WORK ENVIRONMENT |

Somers, Ny - Nov. 25, 2004 - Ibm announced that 100 independent software vendors (Isvs) have enabled their applications to run on the Ibm Workplace platform, a new client computing model that gives employees a single, flexible and security-rich way to access, share and manage applications and data. The company also launched a new Workplace Resource Center on its developerWorks site (www.Ibm.com/developerworks) to give developers and Ibm Business Partners online access to tools and enablement resources for Ibm Workplace technology. Today's announcement is part of the broader Ibm Workplace initiative; a new approach to 'front-end' computing models designed to help organizations migrate from Pc-centric workplaces to network-managed delivery of employee tools and applications in a unified, roles-based environment. At the heart of Ibm's Workplace model is technology that enables companies to centrally manage, provision and deploy business applications and tools across a variety of employee devices, such as desktop Pcs or handheld Pdas. Managing and delivering tools through a network instead of Pc-by-pc can help reduce overall It support costs while building unique work environments tailored to individual employee roles and responsibilities. In addition to 100 Ibm Business Partners building applications on the Workplace platform, Ibm has now secured 1 million customer seats of Workplace software. "Ibm Workplace gives software developers a streamlined client computing platform that helps greatly reduce the development costs of building and deploying industry-specific solutions across a wide range of client devices and operating systems," said Scott Hebner, vice president of marketing and strategy, Ibm Software. "With 100 Ibm Business Partners already leveraging the power of Workplace to revolutionize their customers' client computing models, our goal is to continue delivering the right mix of Workplace environments and enablement tools to support growing marketplace adoption." Bringing Together Applications and Collaboration Tools in a Single Work Environment In a typical workplace setting, employees rely on multiple and largely disconnected email, calendaring, messaging, document management and back-office applications to do their jobs effectively, if not efficiently. As a result, individual employees lose time dealing with format conflicts and document access points while the company's It department faces skyrocketing costs required to deploy, manage and update those systems, user-by-user and Pc-by-pc. Built on Ibm portal, email, document management and collaboration technology, Workplace gives Isvs a comprehensive platform to enhance and deliver their core applications to customers through a single interface with integrated collaboration, messaging and document sharing capabilities. Billing representatives, for example, could collaborate and share documents and data in real-time with their colleagues without leaving the same, rich portal environment through which they access the company's core Crm application. Ibm is also working with pervasive computing Business Partners to help mobile workers, like sales and field forces, take advantage of Workplace Micro Environment (Wctme) mobile middleware to extend enterprise applications to a wide variety of devices. Because the Workplace model contrasts sharply with the traditional 'one-size, fits-all' approach, Ibm is working extensively with leading business application providers like Bowstreet, Hyperion and Adobe to ensure that customers have the right combination of components to meet their unique needs. For example, Bowstreet is delivering tools and technologies to help developers rapidly create, customize, maintain and deploy portlets within a Workplace software environment. The easy-to-use and advanced development features of Bowstreet technology is designed to help streamline the entire portlet development process and deliver in a fraction of the time and cost of traditional methods. New Tools and Resources for Workplace Developers As part of today's announcement, Ibm unveiled a new Workplace Resource Center on its developerWorks site to provide a detailed overview of the technologies and products driving Ibm's Workplace initiative, including links to business and technical articles, whitepapers, code downloads, and other resources to help developers deliver applications in network-centric computing environments. The Workplace Resource Center is available at no cost to Ibm Business Partners and gives developers at all levels access to the latest Workplace tools including Ibm Lotus Workplace Builder, Ibm Lotus Workplace Designer and Ibm Workplace Products Api Toolkit. The new Workplace development tools and resources are designed to give users of varying experience levels -- from experienced programmers to line-of-business managers -- the ability to create customized business applications quickly and easily to maximize the value of new and existing Workplace investments.
