JEAN MONNET PROJECT: 500 PARTICIPANTS EXPECTED ON 30 NOVEMBER AND 1 DECEMBER IN BRUSSELS FOR A DEBATE ON THE ROLE OF THE EUROPEAN UNION IN THE WORLD

Brussels, 30 November 2004 - On 30 November and 1 December 2004, the Jean Monnet Project is organising in Brussels, in collaboration with Ecsa (European Community Studies Association), the 7th international Ecsa-world conference on the theme of “The European Union and emerging world orders: perceptions and strategies”. Some 500 participants, welcomed by José Manuel Barroso, President of the European Commission, and Ján Figel, Commissioner responsible for education, training, culture and multilingualism, will debate with prestigious speakers the place of the European Union on the international scene. The European Commission’s Jean Monnet Project (concerned with the teaching of European integration in universities) and Ecsa-world (European Community Studies Association) are co-organising on 30 November and 1 December a new international conference on “The European Union and emerging world orders”. Faced with numerous challenges on the international political scene, the European Union needs to develop and implement an effective common foreign policy. Its role and capacity to act in the face of new emerging world orders, world economic governance and human development, globalisation and the role of international law and its place as a model for a rule-based world order will be at the heart of the discussions at this 7th conference. The conference will be opened by José Manuel Barroso, President of the European Commission, Ján Figel, Commissioner responsible for education, training, culture and multilingualism and Nikolaus van der Pas, Director-general for education and culture. Eminent speakers (professors, lawyers, Mps and representatives of Ngos) will then take the floor, particularly Boutros Boutros Ghali, former Secretary-general of the United Nations and Federico Mayor, former Secretary-general of Unesco.
The conference programme is available on the following website: http://europa.Eu.int/comm/education/programmes/ajm/ecsa_world/index_en.html
Ecsa is an international scientific network bringing together 51 national associations of teachers and researchers in the field of European integration. It has approximately 8 000 individual members. Http://www.ecsanet.org/
