DIALOG REVOLUTIONISES WEB SEARCHING WEBTOP.COM INTRODUCES: NEW WAYS OF SEARCHING AND RETRIEVING INFORMATION; K-CHECK APPLICATION; THREE INFORMATION ZONES

London, 16 dicembre 1999 - The Dialog Corporation (Lse: Dlg, Nasdaq: Dial), a leading provider of Internet-based information, technology and e-commerce solutions, today unveils Webtop. Com, a new search engine targeted at the millions of professionals using the Web for business purposes. Webtop. Com is being previewed today at the Online Information 99 exhibition and conference in London, England. As the number of business professionals using the Internet increases exponentially, there is a real challenge to make the Web simpler to navigate, and business-related information easier to find. Webtop. Com addresses this challenge by giving users three search options to make finding information on the Web quicker and easier: Type & Search: Using natural language searching, where the user can type in full sentences or multiple key words Copy & Paste: The ability to copy and paste text from a document straight into the search query box ´Drag and Drop´: Offered via the k-check desktop application, enabling the user to ´knowledge check´ a document or email, to find related information available on the Web Webtop. Com utilises Dialog´s own ´linguistic inferencè technologies to make searching easier, by identifying and matching key concepts rather than just key words. This means that Webtop. Com better understands the user´s areas of interest and delivers more accurate results. In addition, Webtop. Com provides structure to the Web, by automatically categorising the sites in its Company and News Zones using Dialog´s Infosort technology. This enables users to refine those search results according to pre-defined business categories. To support the power of Webtop. Com, a totally new utility called k-check has been developed. K-check is a revolution in Web searching - the user simply ´drags and drops´ text on to a separate k-check icon, which resides on the user´s desktop. The text may be a document, an email or a file from the Web. K-check analyses the content, extracts the relevant concepts and posts them to Webtop. Com, where the matching search results are displayed. This is the first time that this kind of ´drag and drop´ search technology has been made available to Internet users. John Snyder, Ceo of Webtop. Com, commented "Business professionals, particularly those new to the Web, want results - fast. For some time, there has only been a perception that finding information on the Web is easy. With Webtop. Com and k-check, it really is, because it works from the user´s own desktop documents. The combination of our concept-driven search engine - which gets to the meaning of the user´s interests - and our indexing of business information on the Web, means that users finally have a serious solution to web-based information retrieval. " When search results are delivered, Webtop. Com then makes it easier to navigate those results because it provides three zones of information: The Web Zone for general website matches The Company Zone, providing data from selected company websites, and The News Zone, offering stories from selected news and magazine sites. Within the three zones, Webtop. Com delivers a short, focused search results list, offering the most relevant page, or homepage, from matching websites, instead of thousands of similar ´hits´. If the user then wants to search ´deeper´, they only need to click on the ´links´ symbol to access more information from a particular website. If the user wants to go direct to the sitè s home page instead, they only have to click on the ´homè symbol. Within the Company and News Zones, the user is also able to further refine their search using Infosort business categories. "Studies show that users will typically only enter one or two words when searching Web portals, " concluded Snyder. "Therè s a process of auto-translation in the mind of many users, where they may have a reasonable idea of what they want, but find it difficult to describe it in more than one or two words. For example, someone reading a new article about the increase in market share of mobile communication devices in South East Asia, who wants to find out more, may just type one word into whichever search engine they are using - such as ´mobilè . They have taken time to both think about the nature of their enquiry, and have to type it in, often using inadequate words to describe what they really need. In this case, the search results may be skewed, the user is besieged by hits, and has to take even more time to find which hits are relevant and valuable to them. " "With k-check, the user simply drags the text of the original document, Html page or email, and drops it on to the k-check icon, which is already installed on the desktop. Relevant and related information from the Web is automatically delivered to the user, via Webtop. Com. It is easy to see how and why ´drag and drop´ has enormous impact in terms of user-productivity. We really believe that the combination of Webtop. Com and k-check will change the expectations of users as they look for information on the Web - they don´t even need to leave the desktop environment to use k-check. Wè ve delivered a serious answer to Web searching - which is seriously easy-to-use. " The first release of Webtop. Com is available to use now on www. Webtop. Com, with over 50 million pages indexed from over a million websites. The Webtop. Com index is growing at 8 million documents per day, and is expected to reach 200 million pages early in the New Year. K-check is available for beta download to a limited number of users, but anyone can register now to receive a free copy of k-check when it is officially released next year.
