Madrid 6 dicembre 2000 Telefonica Móviles, the mobile services subsidiary of Spain´s Telefonica S. A. [Nyse:tef], has selected Lucent Technologies [Nyse:lu] as one of the suppliers of its Universal Mobile Telecommunications Services (Umts) network to its third-generation (3G) consortium in Germany with the Finnish operator, Sonera. The supply agreement for products and services is valued up to Euro 900 million (nearly Us$800million). This agreement, which is subject to the execution of a definitive contract, is expected to form the basis for an extended collaboration between the companies in Austria, Italy and Spain - the other European markets where Telefonica Móviles has secured Umts licenses - as well as other countries where it will obtain Umts licenses in the future. Lucent is providing financing. The terms of the agreement are not being disclosed. Telefonica Móviles cited Lucent´s Bell Labs experience in pioneering the development of the underlying wireless technology for Umts, and an advanced Internet Protocol (Ip)-based architecture integrated with its world-class mobile networks, as significant factors in choosing Lucent. Umts will enable people to access mobile data, video streaming and similar Ip-based interactive multimedia communications from mobile devices. Lucent is the worldwide leader in commercial Cdma, with more 40,000 base stations in service in more than 160 carrier networks around the world. In addition, the company has been collaborating since 1996 with Japan´s Ntt Docomo in commercialising the enabling wireless technology for Umts, known as wideband code division multiple access (W-cdma). Lucent is applying this combined experience in commercial and next-generation W-cdma technology to the development of its flagship world-class 3G Flexent Onebts line of wireless base stations. Lucent´s Umts architecture has been developed around its softswitch programmable software platform to manage voice, data and multimedia communications services across traditional telephone and Ip-based networks. Lucent´s Umts networks will employ softswitch technology to make the Internet mobile through a tight integration with highly reliable next-generation, carrier grade server technology. "Lucent and Telefonica have had a longtime partnership in such areas as high-capacity optical, Ip, mobile and intelligent networks," noted Jim Brewington, group president for Lucent´s global wireless unit. "We are absolutely committed to being mutually successful in 3G by enabling Telefonica Móviles to offer its customers the most advanced mobile services while it reaps the rewards of its Umts investment in the shortest possible time.
