"Strong overall demand in the United States and the international markets for Palm branded handheld products, add-ons, accessories and services together with solid supply chain management enabled us to reach a $2 billion a year sales run-rate during our first year as an independent public company. " Palm shipped more than 2. 1 million handhelds in the second quarter, an increase in unit shipments of 45% sequentially from approximately 1. 5 million units shipped in the prior quarter. With this continuing momentum, the number of handheld devices shipped by Palm to date total nearly 10. 9 million. Palm recently took important steps to advance its leadership position and its three-pronged strategy of developing popular handheld devices, strengthening its industry-leading Palm Os platform, and expanding its content and access business. They include the following: Handhelds and Add-ons In its first full quarter shipping, the popular and stylish m100 handheld (with a retail price of $149) propelled Palm into new markets -- youths and the mass market. The Palm Iiic handheld -- aggressively marketed with exciting colour games and applications and a $30 discount on a Kodak Palmpix digital camera -- created a new colour category focusing on digital photography and sold very well. In recognition of Palm´s wireless solutions, the high-end Palm Vii family earned top accolades from many influential news outlets including Wired Magazine, whose readers voted the Palm Vii integrated wireless handheld a "must have" and the "most-wired tool. " New relationships with Day-timer and Healthetech take the m100 into additional distribution channels. Day-timer is offering consumers the m100 with its paper and software products in an easy-to-use, value-priced package sold at Target Superstores, the Day-timer website, and through the Day-timer catalog. Healthetech, a personal health technology company, is also selling the m100 package with its award-winning diet and fitness software through its online store. To fuel growth beyond the more than 100 hardware add-ons already available for Palm handhelds, Palm announced its Pluggedin Program to help developers quickly create and launch new add-ons that further expand the capabilities of Palm-branded products. The Pluggedin Program will lend assistance from early concept and development through distribution and marketing. Palm Os Platform Samsung´s selection of the Palm Os represents the fourth major handset manufacturer to announce plans to develop products based on the Palm platform. Samsung´s first Palm Powered product, a Cdma handset, is scheduled for sale in the second quarter of 2001. Samsung´s announcement last week follows previously announced agreements with Nokia, Motorola, and Kyocera regarding their use of the Palm Os in telephony products. At last week´s Palmsource 2000 developers´ conference, Palm released to developers the beta version of the Palm Os 4. 0, which supports telephony, 16-bit colour, an Sms client, notification of e-mail and other events, and enhanced security features. Palm also communicated its plans for the development of Palm Os 5. 0, which will support Arm processor technology. At the same event, Palm demonstrated devices working with Secure Digital (Sd) expansion cards and Bluetooth connectivity technologies. Sd cards, the size of a postage stamp, add data storage and input/output capabilities to future Palm handheld devices. The first of these advanced Palm handheld devices is expected to begin shipping in the first half of 2001. To aid the 130,000-plus Palm Economy developer community, Palm announced the availability of new enterprise development tools, including the Sun Java 2 Platform Micro Edition (J2me) and the new Appforge Visual Basic development tool for the Palm Os. Also today, Palm announced an agreement to acquire Wesync, a Portland, Ore. -based company that is a leader in group information-sharing for handhelds. This technology extends Palm´s platform leadership for individual productivity to groups over wireless and wireline connections. Content and Access: Palm announced the public beta version of the Mypalm portal, the first website portal created specifically for handhelds. It builds on Palm´s reputation for great personal information management and takes those strengths to the web, where data can be managed dynamically and accessed wirelessly. The beta version of the portal is scheduled to go live by Dec. 25, 2000. Palm, Delphi Automotive and the Mayfield Fund invested in Mobilearia, a new company that is developing a hands-free mobile Internet service platform for the automobile. It will be offered over integrated hardware, consisting of Delphi´s Communiport Mobile Productivity Centre, a mobile phone and a Palm handheld. Mobilearia expects to launch the initial in-vehicle platform and service during the second quarter of 2001. Delivering on its commitment to make virtually every Palm handheld capable of being connected to the Internet wirelessly, the company began shipping the Palm Mobile Internet Kit globally during the quarter. Consumer, Enterprise and Education Represent Growth Markets Palm mounted an aggressive integrated marketing campaign that used the world´s stages to showcase its solutions. From Comdex in Las Vegas to World Pc Expo in Tokyo and Smau in Italy, from regional education and enterprise forums and Palm´s own developer conference, Palmsource 2000 -- Palm drew large crowds at every stop. New advertising focused on the thousands of applications written for the Palm Os. And pop-culture news magazines ranging from Gq to Variety and Mademoiselle to Mad featured Palm handhelds and accessories as hot products. "In the enterprise market, we´re working to win over corporate Cios, and we´re making good progress helping companies transition to a wireless mobile computing environment," Yankowski said noting, for example, Countrywide Home Loans, one of the largest mortgage lenders in the United States, deployed the Palm Vii family for its sales force to generate real-time rates and qualification results. And in the healthcare industry, Pht Corp. , a pioneer in revolutionising electronic web data capture and control systems for managing clinical trials, is deploying 5,000 Palm Iiixe handhelds in 25 countries to run 420 clinical trials for leading pharmaceutical companies. To support its growing enterprise business, Palm recently announced: An agreement with Ibm Global Services to create a consulting and systems integration competency to focus on developing and deploying business applications for Palm Powered devices, such as the Ibm Workpad, and related Palm based data services, such as the Palm. The company also launched several education initiatives, including: Palm´s Campus Developer Program, which offers Palm developed curriculum materials at a reduced cost to colleges and high schools that are teaching students how to develop software for the Palm Os platform. Palm and Sri International formed the Palm Education Pioneers program that awards grants of Palm handheld computers to K-12 teachers and their students. This technology grant program will enable teachers to incorporate Palm handheld computers into their lessons and provide them to every student in their class. Yankowski continued, "As the global economy continues to shift to handheld computing, few doubt that the beginnings of the mobile Internet are upon us. We have in place the vision, strategy, and a broad and defined roadmap of products, services and Os enhancements to take Palm to the next level. Together with the Palm Economy, we plan to drive this new revolution. " http://www. Palm. Com.
