The Undergraduate Degree Programme in Fashion Design at the Faculty of Arts and Design of the Iuav University of Venice aims at excellence by creating designers capable of facing the challenges that the global fashion system is facing, and by tracing an original path for the definition of an Italian school of Fashion, one capable of connecting the complexities and peculiarities of the Italian situation with the global fashion system, and of pursuing a formative project which can compete with the great fashion schools the world over. The students who enter the Degree Course in Fashion Design directed by Maria Luisa Frisa are faced by a university curriculum that forms professional figures capable of conceptualizing, designing and creating a collection. Students are required to critically use different Fashion tools and means of communication, as well as develop critical thinking of Fashion as a cultural system. The programme stimulates pupils to create relations between aspects of individual and team-work designing and making in both a handicraft and an industrial production scale. The course has an international staff of professors and professionals, while the didactic curriculum is characterized by design and experimental research laboratories integrated with theoretical courses. During the three years students acquire fundamental techniques and notions that allow them to manage complete projects of dress, accessories and their communication. Design and projectual labs are the heart of this Fashion Design Degree, and in the classrooms students learn the procedures of Design applied to themes and issues that are an effective learning process until they can execute their personal objects and their representation. The programme admits a total of 60 students, plus 5 non-Eu students. From academic year 2010-2011 the Faculty of Arts and Design offers the Graduate Degree Programme in Fashion Design and Theories. This programme provides students with high-profile professional and cultural skills, with a didactic approach that gives relevance to both theoretical and design issues, mainly through the formula of “advanced workshops in fashion design”. Through an experimental attitude, these workshops aim to deal with complex and pressing contemporary issues, and they highlight research areas and themes which will be better defined thanks to an virtuous collaboration with industries, companies, organizations, museums.
