LŽUNIONE EUROPEA STA LANCIANDO IN COLLABORAZIONE CON LA CINA UN PROGRAMMA DI RICERCA SULLA SARS CON UN FINANZIAMENTO DI 20 MILIONI DI EURO

Bruxelles, 10 giugno 2004 - Eu-china exchange: An exchange of letters between Most Minister Xu Guanhua and Eu Research Commissioner Busquin was followed by a visit by the Chinese Ambassador to Commissioner Busquin and a visit by Most General Secretary General Shi Dinghuan to Dg Research Dept. Director General Mr. Richardson in Brussels on 16 May. Main results are: 1. China emphasizes high importance for international research cooperation on Sars. 2. An Eu-china expert group should be formed to help preparing joint research projects. This group should have their first meeting in Beijing in Mid June (just before of after the Who meeting in Kuala Lumpur on 17/18 June) 3. Dg Research plans to allocate up to 20 million euro for Sars research. Chinese scientists are encouraged to participate. The Eu research call: Dg Research is preparing a first special research call on Sars with an Eu contribution of 9 million euro. If all preparations go well, the call could be published on 3 July (deadline on 30 September, projects to start still this year). So far the foreseen topics are: Networking of research capacity; molecular evolution of the virus; origin, pathogenicity, and clinical manifestations of Sars, including possible host genetic factors; immunity and infectiousness in the recovered patient; disease transmission; diagnostic tests, therapeutic interventions and vaccines development; epidemiological models on the propagation dynamics of Sars; risk assessment, intervention strategies and implementation/evaluation scenarios; risk communication; infection control procedures.
